From my own experience: When I first configured MCP servers in Claude Code, the mental model clicked immediately. You add a server in your config, Claude discovers what tools it offers, and then calls those tools when your prompts need them. You don't write glue code. You don't manage API keys per-app. The protocol handles the handshake.

There are two ways a client connects to a server. Stdio runs the server locally on your machine — it starts as a subprocess, communicates over standard input/output, and shuts down when you're done.
